A Client's Secret Request

So I'm engaged to this amazing woman who works in marketing. We've been together for about three years now and everything's going great until recently when one of my personal training clients approached me with a very unusual request. Let’s call her Jane, she's around thirty and has been working out at the gym since I started there last year. She usually comes on Mondays and Thursdays, and we've built up a good rapport over time. She mentioned how much she likes pushing herself hard during sessions and that she enjoys it when I’m tough on her. One day after an intense session, she pulled me aside and asked if I'd ever thought about taking things further in our training relationship. At first, I was taken aback, she’s a nice client who's always professional. She explained that she wanted to try something new to push herself out of her comfort zone, but she wasn’t clear on what exactly. I was hesitant because my fiancée and I are very committed to each other, so any flirtatious behavior could create problems in our relationship. But then Jane asked if we could do some kind of role-play where I’d be more than just her trainer, she wanted me to take control like she imagined a gym instructor might during personal training sessions. I explained that while I’m comfortable with the boundaries of professional relationships and always make sure they stay appropriate, this was something I couldn’t really entertain. It would never fit within my moral or ethical standards as a fitness professional and partner. After our conversation, things were a bit awkward for a few sessions. But we both agreed to stick to regular training routines without any of that kind of discussion again. She seemed relieved when we talked about it directly and respectfully, making sure there were no misunderstandings about where the line was drawn between professional fitness guidance and personal relationships. It’s strange how sometimes these unexpected situations arise in what you think is a straightforward professional relationship, especially with someone who might not see those boundaries clearly. In retrospect, I’m glad we addressed it openly because now we have a clear understanding and continue to work together professionally without any issues.
