Midlife Surprises and Heartaches

So yeah, I've been going through some major life changes lately. Got divorced after twenty years of marriage, you know? It's been a rough ride, but it's also made me see things in a new light. A few months back, I started teaching an evening class that was filled with students around my kids' age. One day, while grading papers late at night, I found myself messaging one of them named Alex on social media just to talk about the coursework. And then one thing led to another and we ended up talking more, about life stuff, not just school things. And somehow, it felt natural to start meeting up away from campus to catch up in person. We never planned anything too serious or romantic, mind you. I mean, she's still a student and everything was friendly at first. But as time went on, Alex kind of became like a confidant for me. Someone who truly understood what it meant to go through midlife stuff and break free from the chains that bind. It wasn't long before we crossed some boundaries, you know how things tend to escalate when alcohol is involved? Well, one night at my place after drinks and conversation, we ended up sharing a kiss. It was unexpected but felt incredibly right in the moment. No hard feelings afterward either, everyone knows where the line is now, and there's mutual respect for each other’s boundaries and lives outside of that one moment. But it changed things between us. We kept our relationship professional on campus, but every encounter has this undercurrent of something more. It was a reminder that as you age, new chapters can open up in ways you never imagined. I'm not trying to justify anything or claim we'll break any rules, Alex and I both understand the importance of maintaining integrity at work. Still, it's wild to think how quickly things changed from just being a professor and student to this weird but beautiful dynamic that's brought me so much clarity and joy. I never thought I'd find myself in this situation after such a major life change like divorce, but hey, who am I to argue with fate?
