...The Open Relationship Dynamics...

I’ve been in an open relationship with my partner for about three years now. It’s been mostly smooth sailing, but there are always challenges to work through, right? He’s a bit older than me, forty-five to my forty, and I guess he’s just more… hesitant about our arrangement. Last week, we went on this couples retreat where everything was set up for us to explore and engage in activities that could push the boundaries of our relationship dynamics. There were some interesting options available, couples counseling, workshops on sex positivity... but there was also a session called “Exploring Polyamory.” So I signed us up for it, figuring we could both learn more about how to handle this open dynamic better. The facilitator started off by talking about the importance of communication and consent in poly relationships, which wasn’t really new information for me... but then she started talking about how common it is for people in monogamous or even closed-poly arrangements to have moments when they just want to be with one person and not think about anyone else. That struck a chord. I mean, that’s kind of the whole point of an open relationship, isn’t it? To allow yourself those moments of exclusivity without having to break any promises or commitments... but there was something in her tone, as she spoke more deeply about trust and intimacy, that made me pause. My partner has always been very supportive of my own connections outside our core relationship. But ever since we’ve entered this more exploratory phase of the open relationship, he’s been a little less enthusiastic... maybe because I’m getting a lot out of these experiences and it makes him feel like he’s missing out? We came home from the retreat last Sunday and had that conversation about what I learned. He seemed to appreciate the discussion... but there was something in his eyes when we talked, something guarded. And that’s made me wonder if maybe I’ve been pushing too hard for both of us, or if he’s just not ready for more openness yet. I keep thinking back on those retreat sessions and trying to figure out what it all means. I care about him deeply... but at the same time, there’s this part of me that feels like we’re both being dishonest with each other if we try to stick to a closed dynamic again. It’s confusing, frustrating, and maybe just something that needs more patience from both sides. So here I am, venting it all out... wondering what the next steps should be.
