I Broke Up With Him For Being Too Good At Roleplay

I’ve been dating Alex for a few months now. We met through mutual friends and started seeing each other casually at first, then it evolved into something more serious but not quite exclusive yet. Both of us are in that transitional phase where we’re still figuring out if this is the one or just another passing flame. Alex has always been very open about his kinks and interests, which is actually what drew me to him initially. He’s really imaginative and creative when it comes to roleplaying, something I’ve never experienced before in a relationship. We had some incredible nights where we explored different scenarios together, and that added a lot of spice to our relationship. But there was one night that changed everything for me. Alex suggested trying out an age-gap dynamic he’s always been interested in. He wanted to play the part of an older boss figure and me as his young subordinate needing guidance. I agreed initially because it felt exciting, new, and different from what we usually do. As soon as the roleplay began though, I started feeling uncomfortable. Alex was being incredibly convincing in his role; he had all these little mannerisms down that made him feel like someone much older and more authoritative than me. It’s strange to say, but there were moments when it felt a bit too real for my liking. The way he spoke to me with this commanding tone, the authority he took over our session... I didn’t feel as if we were just playing pretend anymore. It made me realize that I’m not into roleplays where someone has such an overwhelming level of power or control, even if it’s all in fun. The next morning, after a night full of exploration and discomfort, I told Alex how I felt. He was understanding but also sad because he really enjoyed our sessions together. I broke up with him the following week not out of any real issue between us, but because this specific roleplay had made me feel like we might be better off as friends rather than partners moving forward. It was a hard decision to make, and I still haven’t told anyone else about it except for my close friend who convinced me that sometimes you need to listen to your instincts even if they’re hard ones. I’m not sure what the future holds with Alex, but I do know one thing, next time we try something new, I’ll make sure it’s an absolute match for both our comfort levels.
