Caught In A Lie About The TV Show I Watched

I was married for eight years to my college sweetheart, and we had it all planned out. Our lives were like a well-oiled machine. We got into this routine where every Friday night was date night. We'd watch a movie at home with pizza, or sometimes go see something new in the theater. It's one of those things that couples take for granted, but it was our sacred time together. But last year, I had to confess something big to him before we got divorced, something stupid, really. You know how some people have guilty pleasures? Well, he was into sports and I loved reality TV about home renovations. We'd always watched something we both liked on Friday nights or compromised by having separate entertainment time later. A few months ago, a new crime drama series started airing that everyone was talking about. The whole office was buzzing with excitement over it and I wanted to join in the conversations but didn't really like crime shows. One day, my boss asked me if I had seen an episode of this show yet. Feeling left out, I lied, I told him yes, I loved it. The problem is that one lie led to another. The next week, he asked about a different episode and again, I faked it. I started watching clips online just so I could have the context for conversations but honestly hated the genre. My husband noticed how much I was on my phone during Friday nights at home instead of enjoying our date. When we got divorced after years of drifting apart, he found out about my fibs and it soured his view of me even more than the usual reasons couples break up. He felt betrayed by something so small, a white lie about TV, but it was a symptom of much deeper issues in our marriage where I wasn't being myself anymore or truthful with him. Now, I feel like such an asshole for letting one little lie about watching a show ruin my last chances to salvage what we had. Sometimes the smallest things can really hurt people.
