Late Night Secrets and Temptations

I'm a night-shift worker at a warehouse and been married for five years. My shift ends around 7 AM when most people are just starting their day, but that's when I feel the most alive and awake. Lately, something strange has been happening though. It started with my neighbor, let's call her Jess, who’s in her early thirties, she usually walks her dog before dawn. We’ve had a few conversations about weather changes or how noisy it gets around sunrise, but nothing more than friendly banter. Last week was different. I noticed Jess would sometimes come out in just her pajamas when walking her dog late at night. I remember thinking to myself how soft her skin looked against the cold morning air and how her hair was always messy from sleep. Then one day, as fate had it, we were both out around 5 AM after a particularly rough night shift for me. She must have seen my tiredness because she asked if everything was okay. I opened up about how much I struggle with the shift work and feeling disconnected from daily life. We talked for what felt like hours despite the early hour, swapping stories over coffee that we never drank but just pretended to sip while enjoying the quiet. She listened so intently and offered words of comfort and support. A week later, after another late night walk together, she mentioned how much she appreciated having someone understand her nights as well. We talked about our lives again; I shared stories about my wife and kids and even our sex life, yes, the S word at 5 AM in front of a neighbor! Jess listened carefully, sometimes nodding with understanding or looking puzzled. Then one night after talking too long, she leaned close to me. It was just for a moment, but it felt significant. I didn’t know what to do; part of me wanted to pull back and stick to being neighbors, but another part whispered that maybe it was okay to explore something more. The next morning, reality hit hard, we’re both adults with responsibilities. I haven't brought up the night again since. Our interactions are still friendly, but I catch myself sometimes wondering if there’s a line between friendship and something more. It's all so confusing when everyone else is asleep.
