The Late Night Drink Swap

Work as a bartender means meeting all sorts of interesting people late at night. Last month, after closing, we had some regulars staying on for drinks and conversation. Among them were two married couples who had known each other from college, now in their early forties. We started discussing our lives over the bar, where we lived, kids they had, work struggles, and somehow ended up talking about sex and relationships. That's when one of them brought up this idea of swapping partners for a night to spice things up. At first, it sounded like another wild college joke that I would laugh at but not participate in. But as the conversation went on, they were really considering it, wanting something new and exciting without straying from their marriage vows permanently. They wanted someone neutral to guide them through a safe night of exploration. I found myself agreeing to help organize things if everyone was okay with it. That night after closing hours, we set up two private rooms upstairs where they would meet each other in various combinations as planned. It wasn't exactly romantic but more like experimenting with trust and openness among close friends. It felt strange at the time and even stranger now when I think back on it, these people I've known for years doing something so unconventional together. Part of me feels sad for them, that they needed this to feel closer or fulfilled in their marriages.
