The Incident at Work This Week
Anonymous Dirty Ghost #440 · General
I'm feeling really ashamed and embarrassed to confess this, but here goes. I work in a mid-sized office, nothing too exciting usually. My partner and I are engaged, everything's been good lately. We have our own separate routines after work and on the weekends. This week was unusually boring though. The company started a new client project that involved more meetings than actual work, so there wasn't much to do except wait for something to happen. Plus, my partner was away last weekend for some personal family stuff. I didn't want to feel neglected or lonely, but it's been hard. The turning point came on Wednesday afternoon. It was a slow day and I was bored out of my mind. Our office has an open layout, so everyone can see each other pretty easily. We have these occasional team-building events too, but they're not mandatory and often awkward anyway. There’s this one coworker in particular who's always been friendly, let's call him Mike. He’s mid-thirties, married with kids. We started chatting more during breaks as things got slower. It was innocent at first, just small talk about our families and some shared hobbies. But the longer we talked, the more I found myself thinking about...other stuff. The way he would look at me sometimes when no one else was around became harder to ignore. He’s a handsome guy and has this easy charm. It wasn't until that Wednesday afternoon when everything went south. We were both getting antsy with nothing happening, so Mike suggested we go grab some coffee from the café down the street, just us, just for a change of pace. It felt harmless at first, but I started noticing how close he was standing to me while waiting in line. The tension was palpable. Before either of us could really think it through, our hands brushed together as we grabbed cups and there was this spark that neither of us tried to hide from the barista's gaze. It escalated quickly, almost too fast for words. We ended up spending a few extra minutes chatting outside by Mike’s car before heading back. The awkwardness afterwords was suffocating. I felt so guilty about my own reactions and what it might mean for me going forward. My fiancé deserves better from me than these moments of weakness, but there's this part of me that can't stop thinking about it. What if he doesn’t know how much easier this whole week has been because we've talked more? And now I’m here with all these confusing feelings swirling around in my head.
