The Decision I Made at Work Wasn't Easy

I work as a barista at this quaint coffee shop downtown. Ever since my girlfriend and I decided to open our relationship about six months ago, things have been different. It's not that she’s unhappy; we both agreed it would make us happier. The freedom has been exhilarating but also confusing at times. Last week, one of the regulars at the shop, Alex (who is in his late twenties), started spending more time here, often just sitting and working on his laptop instead of rushing out like he usually does after a quick coffee. I found myself noticing him more and more, even while we were talking to other customers. There was something about his easy smile and the way he interacted with everyone that intrigued me. A few days ago, Alex asked if he could give my latte-making skills some pointers. He’s been a barista before and knew what good coffee looked like. I hesitated initially because we already have a lot on our plates relationship-wise, but his offer felt genuine and kind. So, I agreed to let him teach me a few techniques during one of the slower days. As Alex showed me how to steam milk properly and explained the nuances of espresso shots, there was this electric connection between us. It wasn’t just about coffee; it was like he understood something deeper about my personality and how I approached work. We talked about our lives outside of the shop too, his travels abroad, his passion for coffee culture, and somehow, we ended up sharing personal stories that hinted at a desire to be more than just friendly colleagues. The moment felt inevitable but scary. After Alex left the cafe, I was left with these questions swirling in my head: Did he feel it too? Was this even ethical considering our relationship status and workplace setting? And most importantly, what does this mean for me moving forward? I know I’m not alone in these kinds of situations, there’s a whole world of people navigating similar complexities every day. But as much as I want to understand what happened and how it fits into the bigger picture of my life choices, I also realize that sometimes there just isn’t a clear answer.
