...a small white lie...

I've been in this relationship with my partner, let's call her Jane, for five years now. We're both doctors and work long hours at the hospital, so we try to save our evenings for each other. But last week something happened that has me feeling really guilty. So I had these old scrubs from a previous job...they didn't fit quite right anymore but they were my favorite and just threw them away because of that would be awful. Anyway, one day Jane came home with this new bag full of work clothes for us to try on. She's always trying to find the best stuff for us, so it wasn't a surprise. But as we opened it up I saw there was no more room in my closet and my old scrubs were in plain sight...I could tell they looked weird on me, too small really. So here's what happened next that made me feel terrible - instead of telling the truth about them or moving them out of the way (which would look like they belonged to someone else), I lied. Told her I got rid of them but just didn't have a chance to throw away the tags yet. Like, such an unimportant lie in comparison to big things...but it's gnawing at me so much. And now every time Jane brings up our scrubs or cleaning out space for work stuff, I get nervous she'll catch on. But they look so obviously old and small - how long before the truth comes out? I feel terrible doing this to her over clothes but just can't bring myself to admit it. Am I really such a liar even over something tiny like that?
