A Secret From Grad School

So, here I am, married for five years now and still carrying this thing from grad school around with me. It feels like a burden that gets heavier each day, especially when my wife asks about old friends or talks about the struggles of those times. She knows some of it, but nothing specific, she trusts me, you see, and I'm scared to break that trust. But sometimes, at night, I think about how much easier everything would be if I just told her. Anyway, back then, things were tough. Academically, personally, financially. I met this older grad student who understood my pain in a way no one else did. She was ten years older and had faced similar challenges when she went through grad school herself. We started meeting up more often to just talk, we'd go for coffee or have dinner together. One night, after too many drinks at her place, things got...intimate. I don't want to get into the details here; it's enough to say that boundaries blurred and feelings were raw. It wasn't something we talked about beforehand. We both knew it was wrong, but there was a connection, an understanding, a shared pain and desire for escape. After that night, everything changed. She became my confidante in every way, not just academically or emotionally, but physically too. We met whenever we could sneak away from our lives. It wasn't much time, but it was intense. Like I said, she understood me so well. But as the semester went on and life got harder, those moments together felt more and more fleeting. Now that I've moved past all of that, or at least thought I had, it's these lingering thoughts that remind me of what happened back then. My wife is the most amazing person, but there's this part of her story that isn't complete without acknowledging what went down during those tough times. And maybe if she knew, we could finally move on from it together.
