Married Life Surprises Me Sometimes

So here's a little story from the realm of married life that caught me off guard in a good way. I'm a software engineer, and let’s just say my world revolves around coding and numbers, very predictable, very methodical. My wife is an artist, which means she sees the world in colors and stories far beyond my usual scope. We've been together for seven years now, married for five of them, so you'd think we know each other inside out by now. Well, guess again. We were planning a weekend away at this cozy little cabin nestled in the mountains. The idea was to relax, reconnect after months of being on different schedules due to work and art shows. I packed my laptop, some books (of course), thinking it would be just a chance to catch up with emails and have an uninterrupted weekend. She brought her sketchbooks and paints. It's early Saturday morning, coffee still warm, and the cabin is quiet except for the wind outside and the sound of paintbrushes hitting paper. We're sitting on the couch, me in my usual attire, jeans, sweater, and she’s dressed casually but with an artist flair I love. That’s when it happens. She looks at me, her eyes twinkling with mischief that I haven't seen for a while. She pulls out this little black box from her bag and hands it to me. Inside is a set of silk scarves in vibrant colors and textures, nothing like what I'd usually think about or bring on a trip. The playful tone, the look she's giving me...she’s been planning something all along, but I hadn’t picked up on any clues until now. Long story short (and maybe a bit too vague here), we spent that weekend exploring new things together. It wasn't what I expected at all, and there was an element of surprise and adventure in ways I never would have planned myself. It's moments like these where life reminds me that it’s okay to let go, even for a software engineer like me. Anyway, just thought I'd share this little anecdote from my predictable world, because sometimes the unexpected turns out to be pretty great.
