The End of Our Journey Together

I met Alex in a local cafe. We bonded over our love for indie music and quirky films, and before I knew it, we were inseparable. She was the first person to really understand me as nonbinary, even though she’s cisgender. It was exhilarating at first, having someone who respected my pronouns and accepted my identity. But as time went on, Alex became possessive. I never felt comfortable being myself around her friends; every time I suggested going out with mine, she'd get this look in her eye that said 'you're cheating.' Our sex life was the same way, it started off great but soon devolved into something twisted. One night, after a particularly rough argument about how she controlled our social circle, we ended up fucking against the wall in the kitchen. She wanted to push me up and make me take her roughly, as if that would solve everything between us. I let her because I didn’t know what else to do. It was supposed to be cathartic but instead, it left a bad taste in my mouth. The sex became more about control than anything else, she'd often say 'do you want this?' when our hands or mouths were touching, making me feel like a plaything. The final straw came during another rough encounter where I found myself whispering 'please stop' repeatedly while crying. She just ignored it and kept going until the deed was done. That's when I knew something had to change, but it wasn’t about her disrespecting my boundaries or identity, it was more that our entire relationship felt like a trap from which there was no escape. After another month of this cycle, I finally called it quits. Looking back now, being with Alex made me feel trapped in someone else’s fantasy version of who they wanted me to be. The physical intimacy lost its meaning and turned into something painful instead. All I want now is to reclaim my own sense of self and move on from the shadows that defined our last year together.
