The Late Night Shift Mystery
Anonymous Reckless Rogue #141 · General
So, there I was last night at the hospital. I've been working the late shift for about a month now, and it's always the same thing, quiet, lonely nights mostly filled with paperwork and endless cups of coffee. But last night was different. One of our patients, let's call him Jack, came in looking like he'd just been hit by a truck. He’s in his mid-forties and has a history of depression and anxiety. It was clear something had happened that really messed with his head. I tried to comfort him the best way I could but, you know, hospital rules; no hugging or cuddling. Anyway, Jack was crying for hours about how everything was falling apart, job loss, relationship troubles, health issues, and then some random woman at a bar made an offhand comment that sent him over the edge. Normally, this wouldn't be out of place in my line of work. But something weird happened during our conversation. As I was handing Jack his meds and trying to calm him down, he kept looking at me with these intense eyes, almost as if he wanted more than a nurse-patient relationship. It felt strange but also... intriguing? When he started talking about how much easier things would be if he had someone there for support, someone who knew him intimately, my heart skipped a beat. I’m in my thirties and single, mostly by choice. I've never been interested in dating apps or bars since I’ve found it better to keep personal and professional boundaries clear. But something about Jack's story struck me as more than just patient distress; there was an undercurrent of desire that was undeniable. Now, don't get me wrong, I’m not looking for a rebound patient boyfriend or anything ridiculous like that. It’s just that when he asked if I'd been his ‘angel sent to save him,’ it made me wonder, could this be a professional boundary crossing issue, or is there something deeper happening here? So, my question is: Am I the asshole for even considering these thoughts? Or am I allowed to feel attracted to someone who’s going through tough times without compromising my ethics? It's making me second-guess myself more than usual. Oh, and just a quick side note, this whole thing reminds me of that one episode of Friends where Ross tries to date the woman he met in his therapist's waiting room. That really didn't end well for him, did it?
