i did something i never thought i would

so my name is dr. smith, and i've always been really careful about not getting involved with patients personally or romantically. but there's this one patient, let's call her alice, she came in for a checkup last week and we started talking about our weekends. turns out alice likes to go camping on the weekends, and so do i. we ended up bonding over that. the next time alice was in my office, it felt weirdly comfortable between us. before long, we were making plans to go hiking together. i know this is totally unethical, crossing boundaries, but the more time we spent talking about common interests outside of her health issues, the less like a patient she seemed and more like someone who could actually be a friend. or something else... we ended up sharing a meal together last week at my place after our hike. it was just as friends, really, no hint of anything inappropriate in that moment. but then tonight, alice messaged me asking to meet again for dinner. i'm so confused because i don't know if she's looking for more than friendship or if i am. i did something totally out of character and agreed, even though it goes against everything i stand for as a doctor and professional. why did i do this? am i the asshole here? please let me know what you think.
