A Little White Lie for a Delivery Guy

Ever since my divorce last year, I've been working from home as a freelance writer. Today, though, something small happened that made me feel like an 18-year-old again, not in the romantic sense, but in terms of feeling caught and guilty over telling a lie. This morning, there was a package at my doorstep when I woke up, something I didn't order. Confused, I left it outside while I dressed for the day. When I came back, it was still there, and as I opened the door to look inside again, a delivery man from one of those quick couriers asked if that package belonged to me. I told him no, thinking he might just walk away, but instead, he explained he had to verify with his dispatcher before leaving it at my doorstep, otherwise, they have to return it to the sender and try again tomorrow. Of course, I could easily check my order history, but the truth is, this morning I just wanted to avoid admitting I hadn't paid for a subscription service that popped up in an email last week without me realizing what I was agreeing to. So there I stood, telling him the lie and feeling so silly about it, like someone caught with their hand in the cookie jar. But instead of cookies, it's my conscience reminding me to take responsibility for things next time! It was just a small fib, but sometimes those tiny moments can leave you feeling all kinds of emotions.
