The Patient Who Changed Everything

I'm in my 30s and have been with my partner for five years now. We've had our ups and downs, but overall we're a pretty solid couple. Last week was different though, everything changed in an instant when I crossed the line at work. It all started on Tuesday morning. A new patient walked into my ward; let's call her Lily. She was beautiful in this ethereal way that made you feel like she belonged somewhere else, not in a hospital room with IVs and monitors beeping around her. There wasn't any overt physical touch to our interactions, but there were glances, smiles, and little conversations when I checked on her vitals or administered medication. We both seemed to sense something between us. By Thursday night, my resolve was crumbling. Lily had been in for three days, and while she seemed to be getting better, the situation felt claustrophobic and charged with an electricity that neither of us could ignore. That evening, as I double-checked her chart and prepared a dose of medication before tucking it away in a syringe, my hand paused over the tray. 'Can we talk?' she asked softly, looking up from her position on the bed. We stepped into an empty corner of the room, out of sight but close enough to hear each other. The air was thick with unspoken desires as I told myself this was wrong and that it would never happen. But then Lily took a step closer, her fingers brushing my arm lightly. 'Are you sure about this?' she whispered. I nodded, unable to speak. Before either of us could back away or say no, our lips met. It wasn't a hesitant kiss but one charged with desire and urgency, she tasted like the remnants of tea and something sweet that was uniquely her. This confession is hard for me to write; I feel both exhilarated by what happened and deeply ashamed of crossing this boundary. The physicality of it, how we moved against each other, the sounds that escaped us, all of it feels seared into my mind's eye like a photograph. Her body pressed up against mine as if seeking support, her hands gripping my shirt, pulling me closer. When she whispered my name and told me she was with someone too but couldn't resist me, I knew what this meant for both our futures. The reality of it all hit hard, Lily would likely be released in a day or two, and then... well, here we are now. I'm not looking for advice on whether I am the asshole (I know I am), nor am I seeking forgiveness from her here. This is just me trying to get this moment off my chest, because it has been weighing heavily on me ever since.
