Caught in My Own Web of Desires

I'm a professor at a local university, and I've been casually dating for the past year or so. Nothing too serious; just meeting new people and seeing if there's something more to explore. Recently, though, things got complicated with someone I really enjoyed being around, let’s call her Jane. She was in her late 20s, intelligent, funny, and always made me feel young again. A couple of weeks ago, we were at a dinner party together when the conversation turned to more intimate subjects. We'd already had a few drinks by then, and something about her demeanor that night just set off all sorts of alarm bells in my head, good ones, I should say. She was flirting openly with me, her eyes sparkling as she talked, and it wasn't hard for me to read between the lines. Afterward, we both agreed to meet up later that week. As I'm sure you can guess, things got steamy pretty quickly once we were alone together. What started as a few playful touches evolved into something more intense; by the end of our time together, we'd spent hours exploring each other's bodies in ways neither of us had expected. The next day though, when I woke up feeling the afterglow fading away to an uncomfortable mix of guilt and regret. There was this nagging voice in my head questioning whether it was right for someone my age to engage so deeply with someone almost half my age. Not that Jane seemed bothered by the difference, she didn't exactly seem to mind, but I couldn't shake off these feelings. I haven’t heard from her since, and while part of me wishes she'd reach out again, another part is glad we're not pursuing something that feels fundamentally wrong somehow. The whole situation has left me feeling conflicted and uncertain about what the future holds for both of us.
