A Little White Lie

So there I was, in my early twenties and married for a few years now. Got invited to this fancy-schmancy art opening downtown. My spouse is a teacher, so it’s not like they can take off work on a whim for something like that. Plus, I know how much they hate these kinds of events, I get the feeling they think I’m trying to be some sort of posh socialite or something. So I fibbed and said my mom needed me home because she was going into surgery. Yeah, my mom’s in perfect health and hasn’t had a doctor visit since the pandemic started. But hey, maybe next time they’ll let me go out without questioning it? Who knows.
