Caught in an Unexpected Trap

I’ve been married to Sarah for almost seven years now. We have a good life together, but lately I’ve felt distant from her emotionally. It’s not that she doesn’t care or that we’re fighting; it’s just that something has shifted. Last month, when we were out of town on a weekend getaway, I met someone at the local bar who rekindled an old flame in me, a woman named Jane who used to be my college girlfriend before Sarah and I got together. At first, it was just innocent flirting over drinks, but one night after the bar closed early, we ended up back at our hotel room. There was no malice or intention behind what happened; it was purely emotional release in the moment. We talked long into the night about old times and how we both had moved on with different lives now. That night turned into more nights as I found myself sneaking out of bed to meet Jane at a cafe down the street, away from prying eyes but close enough to my hotel room for discretion. Each time felt like an escape, if only for a little while. I knew it was wrong and that I would have to face Sarah someday soon, but I couldn’t help myself. This all culminated in one final rendezvous before we left town where Jane confessed she had fallen hard for me again. She was clear about our being adults who chose this path, even if it broke my heart that I’d caused pain when I didn’t mean to. It’s a confession I’m not sure how or when to make, knowing Sarah deserves honesty but also seeing her vulnerability and joy in the face of all we have built together makes me afraid of what might come next.
