A Lie at Work Isn't Worth a Lie at Home

I work the night shift at a warehouse. It's not glamorous or exciting, just long hours with my coworkers and repetitive tasks that don’t give much room for meaningful conversations. My partner, whom I love dearly but have an open relationship with because of differing needs, is always tired during the day. She's a teacher who finishes work late, and we often only see each other for short periods before she has to leave early in the morning for another day at school. A few weeks ago, one of my coworkers told me about a local food place that’s open until midnight with great deals on meals if you’re working overnight. It sounded perfect because I usually bring pre-packaged meals from home or rely on vending machine junk during my break times, both options leave me craving something more substantial. One evening, right before my shift ended and after spending a whole week eating that way, I decided to try the place out. On my way back home, I made up an excuse about needing to get some groceries at a nearby 24-hour store because we were running low on pantry staples. My intention was just to appease her worries about me eating alone, after all, she’s always looking out for me even though she's tired from work. But as days went by and I continued enjoying these meals without telling the truth, my guilt started mounting. She noticed how much better I looked in terms of energy levels since trying this place, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell her about it because I didn't want to upset the balance we had, her feeling like she's constantly worrying about me and taking care of me when she's already exhausted. Tonight, after a particularly tough shift, I ordered one last meal there before committing to something else next week. As I’m driving home now, the guilt is overwhelming, I’ve been lying for weeks over such a small thing that doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. It’s not about sex or intimacy or anything romantic; it's just this little lie that started as an attempt at convenience and turned into something more complex because of our open relationship dynamics.
