A Little White Lie at Work

I'm the kind of person who usually tries to be straightforward and honest in my work. But there was one day when I couldn't resist telling a little white lie. It wasn't about something big or even particularly important, but it still bugged me afterwards. My coworker had asked me if I remembered where she left her USB drive from last week's project. I didn't actually know where it was, having not seen it since the meeting we all had together. But instead of admitting that to her and offering to help look for it, which would've just led to a few minutes wasted time, I said I thought she might have put it in our shared storage locker. It seemed like an easy enough fix until later when I realized she'd gone straight there and spent half the afternoon searching around to no avail. The guilt of knowing I caused her unnecessary trouble lingered for days.
