A Small Lie of Convenience
Anonymous Shameless Wraith #564 · General
After my recent divorce, I've been trying to navigate new social dynamics with a level head. One day, I met an old friend for coffee and, in the midst of catching up, mentioned that I had attended a dinner party at a popular venue downtown last weekend. The truth is, I didn't go anywhere near it; I spent my Saturday afternoon organizing stacks of papers from my ex's possessions, sorting through items to donate or discard. When she casually asked about other guests in attendance and how the evening was, I felt compelled to embellish a bit more, describing the ambiance and even mentioning people by name who hadn't actually been there. I can rationalize it as an attempt to keep up appearances, but part of me knows it's just another symptom of feeling adrift since my separation. The lie feels trivial in hindsight, merely a momentary lapse of authenticity, but it gnaws at me nonetheless. I've always prided myself on honesty and clarity in my relationships, so why did this small fib feel like such a relief when I said it? It's left me questioning whether the discomfort stems from being caught or if there's something deeper about needing to present a more cohesive image of myself even when the reality is messy.
