...A Lesson In Trust...

I’ve been with my partner for five years now. We’re both in our late thirties and have a solid relationship. I teach at the local high school, she works from home as an artist, and we live comfortably without any real drama. But there’s this one thing that’s been weighing on me lately... It all started last year when a student named Alex joined my class. He was just a kid, just turned eighteen, but something about him felt different. I’m not sure if it was his maturity, his intelligence, or the way he talked to me outside of class. We’d have these little conversations in the hallway, and I always had this... fluttering feeling whenever we were near each other. It’s hard to explain because I’ve never been one for feelings like that before. It wasn’t anything I acted on, but it lingered there, this quiet pull at the edges of my thoughts. And then he started showing up after class more often. Not to stay long, just a minute or two while others left. He’d tell me about his projects, ask for help with assignments even though he didn’t need it, and I would listen... I felt guilty for it too, because the truth was... I wanted him to stick around longer than that. After class ended one day, he stayed behind like usual, but this time he didn’t leave right away. He just stood there, looking at me with those intense eyes of his and I couldn’t help feeling drawn in deeper. We had these awkward moments where the silence between us seemed to stretch... But then something happened that made everything fall apart. My partner started asking about my teaching job more often. She wouldn’t say anything specific but there was this tension building up, like she knew something or sensed it somehow. It wasn’t until we had a big fight last month over it that I realized the extent of how deep this thing with Alex went... I told her everything... Or rather, I didn’t tell her anything concrete but I confessed my feelings to her and admitted to spending extra time with him after class. The guilt was suffocating by then, but I had to be honest with myself, and her, about it all. She broke down crying, asking if I loved this kid... We haven’t resolved it yet. We’re still working through the trust issues she feels and the confusion I’m stuck in...
