I Lied About My Weight

So, I’m a nurse in my early 30s and not really in the market for anything serious right now. I’ve been single for a while and honestly, I’m okay with it. But sometimes, these little things get to me. You know how you’re sitting there at lunch one day and your friend mentions something that sets off some weird train of thought? It all started when Sarah brought in her new fitness tracker last week. She was super excited about it and couldn’t stop talking about how she’s already lost 5 pounds since the start of the year. I’m not a big fan of gadgets, so I just smiled and nodded while pretending to pay attention. Then came lunchtime yesterday at work, and Sarah asked me point-blank if I was going to get one too. The thing is, my weight has been stable for years, I’ve maintained it quite well by being careful with what I eat and staying active. But there’s this one area where I could stand to lose a few pounds. I know I shouldn’t let such things bother me so much, but here’s the real kicker: she asked if I was worried about my weight going up as we get older. It felt like an indirect jab, and suddenly all I wanted was to have an answer for her. So, I told a little fib. When she brought it up again, asking me how many pounds I needed to lose this year, I said something vague like, “Oh yeah, about five or six.” The lie didn’t come naturally at all; I could tell it was written all over my face. And here’s the thing, I’m not even sure why I did it. Was it to avoid confrontation? To save face in front of a colleague who might think less of me for having no goals? Or maybe just because I’ve been feeling down about myself lately? It’s silly, isn’t it? Here I am worrying over a tiny white lie when my life is mostly going well otherwise. But it keeps gnawing at the back of my mind, every time Sarah mentions her tracker or any other topic related to weight loss. Now every time she brings up fitness goals and numbers, I feel sick inside knowing that I just couldn’t be honest about my own situation. It’s such a trivial thing in the grand scheme of life, but it feels heavy on me right now.
