Caught in a Moment I Never Planned

I've been teaching at this university for over three decades now. My divorce finalized last month, and to be honest, it felt like the whole world was spinning out of control. I didn't think much of it when a young student named Emma started coming by my office hours more often, she's in her twenties, but still very bright and eager to learn. We'd chat about classwork, sometimes even go for coffee at the university cafe together. It felt friendly, like mentorship. But there was always this undercurrent of something else lingering between us. I chalked it up to my divorce blues and being lonely. Then one day, a colleague mentioned they thought Emma had feelings for me too. At first, I laughed it off, but the idea gnawed at me, what if she did? And what about me? Wasn't that... wrong? I started avoiding her, not wanting to cross lines we shouldn't cross. But one night after grading late papers, Emma stopped by my office unannounced. She looked nervous yet determined. 'Professor,' she said, 'there's something I need to tell you.' And before I could stop her or myself, it all spilled out, the feelings, the curiosity. I remember thinking how much this would ruin everything: my job, her future here at the university. But in that moment, we were both trembling and vulnerable. We decided to take a break from reality, just for an hour or so, to see where these unexpected emotions might lead us. It was intense, but also very consensual. Reflecting on it now though... I don't know how long I can keep this secret from myself, let alone everyone else around me. What started as a moment of weakness has turned into an ongoing dilemma I'm not sure how to resolve.
