I Let Myself Be Tempted by a Student, But I Drawn the Line at Crossdressing Roleplay

I’ve been teaching for over two decades now and have always prided myself on maintaining strict boundaries between my personal life and work. I’m in an open relationship with my partner, which has allowed me some freedom to explore different types of kinks together. However, a recent interaction has left me feeling conflicted and unsure about whether or not I’ve crossed too far into inappropriate territory. Last week, one of my students named Alex came to my office hours for advice on his thesis project. We clicked over something we both loved, vintage video games. It was just small talk at first, but over a few weeks of these meetings, the conversations grew more personal and intimate. I could feel a growing tension that went beyond just academic interest. One day, Alex dropped hints about this kink he had involving crossdressing roleplay. He asked if I’d ever tried it before. It’s not something my partner and I explore together, but hearing Alex talk about it made me curious in ways I hadn’t expected. Our conversations started veering towards more flirtatious territory. At one point, Alex suggested we could try out this roleplay during our next session, for both of us to dress up as characters from old games and pretend to be them while discussing thesis topics. It was all in good fun, but I knew the line between mentor and student had blurred dangerously close. I decided then that no matter how attracted to Alex I felt or how intrigued by this fantasy world he proposed, it wasn’t worth risking my career or our established power dynamics. So instead of going along with his suggestion, I made sure to reassert boundaries firmly while also letting him know it was nothing personal against him, just not something I could do professionally. Since then, Alex seems distant and a little hurt by my refusal, which makes me wonder if I might have missed an opportunity for a mutual exploration. But the risks are too great. The guilt still sits with me though as I weigh if there’s any way to salvage our professional relationship without compromising my ethics or his well-being. In retrospect, maybe all those vintage games we talked about were just old-fashioned in their morals, reminding me that crossing certain lines isn’t worth the cost of losing integrity.
