A Little White Lie...

I've been in a long-term relationship with Sarah for six years now. We've both had our ups and downs, but she's my best friend, and I love her deeply. A few weeks ago, something small happened that has been gnawing at me ever since... Sarah got a new job as an HR manager about two months ago. She's really excited about the change in pace and environment. One day, she came home with some promotional swag from her company: a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels that had come in the mail. I know how much Sarah loves these little snacks... I've been working on my health lately; I'm trying to lose weight and eat better, so I avoid sweets whenever possible. However, those pretzels were really tempting... So one day when she was out of town for a conference, I took them from her desk drawer without saying anything... I couldn't stop thinking about what I did ever since. It's not like it's the end of the world, but it doesn't feel right at all. Every time Sarah mentions how much she loves those snacks or how she looks forward to getting more, I cringe inside knowing I've already eaten them... Sometimes I wonder if this is what other people mean when they talk about a little white lie eating away at you... It's not a big thing objectively speaking, but it feels like a betrayal of the trust we have. And honestly, it makes me feel small and ashamed. I just wish I could go back in time and say something to her instead of being petty and keeping this silly secret. But now that I've taken them, what's done is done... Now all I can do is hope she never finds out or at least forgive me if she does...
