Caught in a Moment of Weakness

Anonymous Sinful Ghost #174 · General

I’ve been in my current relationship with Sarah for over six years. We’re both doctors at the same hospital, and while our careers are incredibly demanding, we manage to keep things relatively stable. A few months ago, I started experiencing some serious stress from work, long hours, challenging cases, you know how it goes. It took a toll on my sleep and mood. Despite all this, Sarah is always there for me, supportive and understanding. One night after another grueling shift, feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, I found myself sitting alone in the hospital’s empty cafeteria. The silence was suffocating. Just then, Mike from surgery walked in. We had a brief but flirtatious interaction once before, under much more normal circumstances. This time, something about his concern for me triggered an unexpected response. He noticed my weariness and seemed genuinely worried. We ended up talking for what felt like hours, sharing stories that we wouldn’t normally reveal to anyone else. Our conversation took an unintentional turn when I opened up about some personal frustrations in my relationship with Sarah. It was the first time I had spoken so openly to someone outside of it, someone who wasn’t part of our close circle. Eventually, Mike suggested we take a walk around the hospital grounds for fresh air and calmness. During that walk, something shifted between us. There was an undeniable tension as we strolled together in the moonlight. Despite my initial intent to just vent, I found myself leaning into this newfound connection with Mike, a spark of attraction that had been smoldering beneath the surface. That night, despite knowing better and considering what it would mean for both my career and relationship, I let emotions guide me. After our walk, we went back inside to grab something to drink. We ended up in his office alone, talking more intimately about each other’s lives. The chemistry between us was undeniable. Now weeks later, the guilt has been weighing on me immensely. Mike and I haven’t seen each other outside of professional settings since that night. While we never acted upon our mutual attraction beyond a few innocent touches and lingering glances, I know my actions were inappropriate. Despite the immediate relief talking to him gave, it was clear this wasn’t just a momentary lapse but an emotional escape from real issues in my life. So, I’m reaching out here for advice, am I really the asshole here? Is there any way back after something like this with someone you both trust implicitly at work? What would you do if you were me?
