My Secret with Jane at Her Birthday Party

I met Jane when we both joined a local book club. We hit it off right away and became close friends over the next year or so, often hanging out for dinner or drinks outside of the club. About six months ago, I found myself thinking about her more than just as a friend, there was something magnetic about her that made me want to get closer. But then we both got busy with life and work commitments, and things went back to our usual dynamic: respectful friendship with none of my growing feelings ever hinted at. Until last month when Jane called me for her birthday party plans. I knew she wanted everyone there to celebrate but had no idea it would end up as the scene of an awkwardly intense moment between us. On the night of her birthday, we were getting drinks and chatting in a group when the conversation turned to favorite things. Someone mentioned that they’d be into having someone else dress them or play with their hair, something playful but intimate too. I was struck by how such simple acts could evoke deep feelings for me, particularly as Jane looked at us all intently. As we said our goodbyes and she walked home later in the evening, it felt inevitable that I would follow her back to her place. She didn’t seem surprised when I showed up on her doorstep either. Inside, we talked more, about everything but the elephant in the room. Then as the night wore on and alcohol took its toll, we moved closer together until our lips met. It was an odd mix of passion and tenderness. She kissed me back at first, then pulled away quickly looking confused and embarrassed. We didn’t make love that night, I felt too unsure about it to press further, but the moment lingered heavily between us as we both dressed again for goodbyes. Since then, while we remain close friends who have regular catch-ups and hangouts like before, there’s been an unspoken shift. I want more from her than just friendship but am afraid of ruining our bond. And yet, every now and then, we’ll glance at each other with that moment still lingering behind those eyes. It feels unfair to bring this up given how things are going well between us otherwise, but it’s hard ignoring the electricity that hangs in the air whenever Jane and I are around one another.
