The Customer Who Became More Than Just a Customer

I work at a small bookstore in a quiet part of town. It's the kind of place where regular customers become more like friends over time, and you get to know them by their order history and what they usually ask for help with. One day, a new customer came in. He was in his late twenties, had an air of mystery about him, and seemed to be quite knowledgeable about literature. We chatted briefly that first visit about the latest sci-fi releases and soon found common ground on dystopian novels and philosophical essays. After several visits where we would occasionally talk while he browsed, I learned that he was going through a tough time in his personal life but kept it light at work to avoid burdening others with his problems. One day after work, I received an unexpected text from him asking if I wanted to get coffee sometime. It caught me off guard; I wasn't used to this kind of thing happening between coworkers and customers. We decided to meet up casually just as friends, no pressure. Over a few cups of coffee and some light banter, he began sharing more about his struggles with an ex-partner who had been emotionally abusive during their relationship. He expressed how isolating it was feeling unable to talk about these issues openly without judgment. After our conversation at the cafe, we texted back and forth a bit more often than before, usually just catching up on how each other’s days were going or sharing recommendations for new books. Then one day, out of the blue, he suggested meeting up again but this time in his place so I could see where he lived since he couldn’t show me around his apartment during work hours due to the store's policies. When we met at his home a couple of weeks later, there was an undeniable tension between us that wasn't just friendly anymore. We ended up talking more about our shared interests and how much I admired his resilience in handling past trauma. As the evening wore on, there were moments where it seemed like he might want to explore something beyond friendship, but both of us hesitated given how we met. He eventually brought up that he wanted me to know how much he appreciated my understanding ear and thought highly of our conversations, but wasn't sure if I was interested in a romantic or physical relationship. I found myself in an odd position, I genuinely enjoyed his company deeply, yet felt guilty considering taking this step beyond work boundaries. The question remains: Was it wrong to entertain the possibility of more from someone who has opened up about their vulnerabilities while under circumstances that were professional? How do we navigate these kinds of situations ethically and respectfully? Thoughts?
