A Night On Call

I was on call last week as a nurse and ended up staying overnight at the hospital. Around midnight, an emergency brought in a patient who needed one-on-one care, so I took him to a private room and settled in for what would be a long night. As time went by and he required more personal attention, it became apparent that his condition was affecting him in ways beyond just physical pain or discomfort. There's no denying the human side of things when you're alone with someone who is vulnerable and in need. The patient slipped into delirium from medication and reached for me in a way I wasn't expecting. He clung to my hand, seeking comfort. It was then that he whispered something surprisingly intimate, making me acutely aware of his gaze on me despite the dim light. His words caught me off guard but were said softly and with an urgency that spoke volumes. We remained professional, yet there was a moment where it felt as though lines blurred for just a second. That brief encounter left me reflecting on the unpredictable nature of human connection and its capacity to touch us deeply in ways we least expect.
