A Lie That Stuck

I’ve been telling a little fib about my commute for weeks now. See, it’s not exactly true that I bike to school every day from my place, it's only partially true because sometimes the weather turns nasty or I just feel too lazy. But instead of admitting I’m taking the bus with one less carbon footprint than driving, I stick to the story about biking. It feels like a badge of honor, this silly little lie that makes me sound more committed and healthy. And yes, there’s probably no reason for me to hide it because who cares if someone finds out? But somehow, it became something else, a tiny slice of fiction in my life where I’m the hero every single day. Sometimes I wonder why I bother keeping up this charade; other days, when I actually do bike through rain and snow just to prove myself right, I feel oddly empowered by it all.
