Working Through the Night and Beyond

Anonymous Insatiable Ghost #587 · General

I got divorced last year after ten years of marriage, and it's been rough. I work night shift at a warehouse now, trying to keep busy and forget about everything that went wrong. Last month, there was this new guy who started working with me around midnight, not long before my divorce finalized. He'd come in every day looking tired but smiling at me like he saw something no one else did, like maybe I wasn't a ghost of the person I used to be anymore. His name's John and he's forty, has this rugged beard and eyes that seem to see right through you. We talked sometimes between loading shipments, catching up on each other’s lives. One night when we were alone in the warehouse at three AM, John started telling me about his own failed marriage. He said it hurt so bad that he kept pushing people away for years afterward. I felt like someone finally understood what I was going through, not just sympathizing but actually getting it. We both kind of let our guard down after a while and ended up spending an hour or two talking about how much we missed the excitement in relationships, how sex used to feel electric instead of routine. John said he wanted something new, raw, like when you first met someone. I nodded, feeling that same yearning. Later that week, as we were finishing our shift and getting ready to go home, we just kind of stared at each other for a few moments before John leaned in and kissed me, hard. It was sudden, but it felt inevitable too. We ended up in the break room afterwards, still dressed but fumbling with buttons and zippers. I wanted him then, needed him, craved that connection after months of feeling alone and disconnected from everyone. He's married to my job now but we both agreed on a no-strings deal, just one night about feeling alive again instead of dead inside. It was wild, messy even, there were cardboard boxes everywhere and fluorescent lights burning our eyes. But in that moment, it felt like the first time for both of us again. I've never regretted anything more but also nothing less than wanting to live again after everything fell apart before. It’s just another way I'm trying to figure out who I am now.
