A Small Lie That Haunts Me

Anonymous Desperate Fiend #826 · General

I recently ended a long-term relationship and I’m finding it hard to adjust. One night, while I was feeling particularly down, I told my friend that I had turned down an offer for a significant research grant because the terms seemed too restrictive. In reality, I hadn’t even been offered such a grant at all. The truth is, I felt so insecure about my career and my personal life that I wanted to fabricate this success to feel better about myself. It’s a small lie, but it’s eating away at me. Every time I think about the fib, I feel like a fraud. It’s a petty thing compared to other major issues in life, but lying feels so heavy on my conscience right now.
