The Day I Bent The Rules At Work

Okay, let me set this up for you. This is a story from earlier today at work where I basically played fast and loose with our store policy, and it feels pretty good right now, but also kinda wrong somehow. So there was this lady customer who came in wanting to return an item that she’d had for more than thirty days, which isn’t allowed by the company rules. Now, usually, when someone comes up short like that, I just have to tell them it can't be done, and they go away disappointed or angry. But today, something felt different. I looked at her face, she seemed so crestfallen, like maybe this was her last chance for a refund on an important gift gone wrong. So, without thinking too hard about the rules, I did something I probably shouldn't have. I just gave it back to her straight up and said 'no questions asked'. It felt great at the moment because I saw that smile of relief wash over her face as she thanked me and left. But then, later on, when things got quieter again, I started second-guessing myself. Did I really go against company policy for no good reason? Was it worth bending the rules just to make one customer happy? The store manual is clear about returns after thirty days, but here I am breaking that rule without thinking twice. I mean, she seemed grateful and all, so maybe there’s something good in doing things outside of what's written. But still, part of me can't shake off this nagging feeling like I crossed a line somewhere. Guess I'll have to decide for myself if bending those rules was worth it or not.
