A Lie I Told My Husband
Anonymous Devious Sinner #484 · General
I've been a nurse for over ten years now and married for seven. The work can be intense, but it's the human connections that keep me going. However, last month there was an incident at work that has been eating away at me ever since. One of my patients, let’s call him Tom (he's 40), had a rather unfortunate bathroom accident. He needed immediate assistance and I had to help clean him up and make sure he felt comfortable again. His wife was nowhere to be found and he needed help right then, so the responsibility fell on me. Now here’s where it gets tricky. As Tom lay there with his eyes closed and clearly embarrassed by the whole situation, a small part of me got a little thrill out of being the one who had to take care of him in such an intimate way. This shouldn’t surprise you considering I've always felt somewhat drawn to helping others, but something about this moment made me feel special, like Tom needed me more than anyone else at that moment. The next day when my shift was over and I got home from work, my husband mentioned how proud he is of the dedication I show for my patients. I nodded and smiled as usual, but inside I felt a twinge of guilt because what I didn't mention to him was just how much satisfaction it gave me to be the one who took care of Tom. I kept this secret from him, thinking that sharing such an intimate detail about helping someone so intimately might make us both feel uncomfortable or confused. I've never been dishonest with my husband before and this small lie is eating away at me. It's petty in a way because it wasn't even about something illegal or harmful, it was just a fleeting feeling. But now I feel like there’s this huge gap between what I felt and what I said, and it's making the thought of telling him impossible. This confession feels small, but it's a real step for me to finally talk about this and acknowledge that honesty is always better than silence.
