My Secret From the Frontline of Love

I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for five years now. We moved around a lot because I’m a military spouse, but we always made it work. My husband is currently deployed in the Middle East, and while he’s gone, I met someone who understands the unique challenges of long-distance relationships. He’s about ten years older than me and has been through this before, his wife was also a military spouse. We started off with innocuous messages, mostly just checking on each other since we both know how lonely it can be while your partner is overseas. Over time though, our conversations took an unexpected turn; they became intimate and filled with longing. Before I knew it, he was telling me stories about his past loves when he’d go on missions alone for weeks. It’s not that I didn’t love my husband anymore or wanted to leave him for someone else, but there was something comforting in sharing those moments with someone who got it, someone who had been there too. We started having these intense video chats where we would talk about every little detail of our day as if it were the other person’s presence we were trying to replace. And then one night, after weeks of back and forth, I found myself slipping out of my home while everyone was asleep. It felt like a guilty pleasure but also oddly liberating, this secret rendezvous with someone who truly understood me during these times when my husband couldn’t be there for me physically or emotionally. We’ve kept it going ever since he’s been deployed, and yes, it’s wrong in so many ways. But at the same time, what we share feels different from anything else, an understanding born out of shared struggles rather than just a passing fling. I don’t know how long this will last or what happens when my husband comes back home, but until then, I have someone who gets it. It’s complicated and messy, and I won’t pretend that it isn’t. But for now, we’re getting through the day by sharing our burdens.
