Confession of a Complicated Love

I've been teaching high school English for ten years now. I'm thirty-eight and have always thought that my life was pretty solid, stable job, close-knit community, loyal friends. But the thing is, about six months ago, everything changed when this new math teacher started at our school. We used to be just friendly colleagues, but then one day after a staff meeting, we ended up talking outside the faculty lounge as everyone else left. I was stressed out from grading papers and she seemed genuinely concerned. She offered to help me through my workload with some of her more efficient methods. That moment marked the start of something deeper than friendship. I don't know if it started because she was always there, or because we just hit it off so well, but soon enough I found myself opening up about personal things, confiding in her during lunch breaks and after school. Our conversations went beyond work and academics; they became more intimate. And then one night, after staying late to grade papers again, we decided to take a walk around the campus grounds. It was dark out, just the two of us under the stars. That's when it happened, a kiss that felt like the culmination of months of building tension and shared understanding. I remember my hands gripping her waist as she pulled me closer, our lips moving together in a way that made all rational thought fade away into the night air. It was incredible yet terrifying; this woman is not only one of my colleagues but also someone's wife back home. And there I was, kissing her with every intention of exploring more. Since then, we've been seeing each other discreetly after hours or over weekends when our schedules line up. There are no guarantees about the future, neither of us wants to cause a scandal that could cost me my job here at this school that means so much to me and has for years. But every time I see her across the faculty room, my heart beats with both hope and fear. Our arrangement feels like cheating not just on my professional integrity but also on my personal principles. This isn't about finding someone better or a spark of true love, it's about desire taking over despite knowing all too well that what we're doing is wrong and potentially destructive to everything I've worked hard for. And yet, when she calls me late at night, telling me how much she needs this connection right now, my resolve crumbles away until nothing remains but aching want. I feel like an idiot every time it happens, in love with someone who isn't available, and too afraid to let go of the forbidden thrill. It's exhausting, confusing, and incredibly lonely.
