Patient Confidentiality Meets Bedroom Curiosity

Anonymous Naughty Menace #911 · General

So there I was, the resident physician on call in the middle of the night, when this particularly charming patient walked through the door. She had come in with a complaint that I could diagnose with my eyes closed, anxiety and insomnia. Yet something about her was different tonight. As she laid out her concerns with a level of detail that bordered on obsessive, it became clear there was more than just restless nights at play here. I shouldn't have been so surprised when she started asking questions I had no business answering from a medical standpoint, the kind that made me wonder if she was seeking relief from symptoms or something entirely different. The situation grew oddly intimate as we delved into topics better left between consenting adults in private, but there it was, spilling out under the harsh fluorescent lights of my office. When the night finally drew to a close and I sent her on her way with prescriptions for sleep aids and antianxiety meds, a part of me wished she had brought me something else, a prescription for some real adult conversation outside these four sterile walls.
