Caught Between Duty and Desire

I've been teaching high school history for five years now. My life was pretty straightforward until I met Jane last year. She's an English teacher at the same school, smart, funny, and we clicked right away. We started dating a few months later and have been together ever since. It all seemed perfect, but there’s this part of me that worries about being seen as more than just professional colleagues by my students or their parents. Jane is also cautious, though she's less worried than I am. She says we're both adults who know how to keep things private. Last week, something happened that has really thrown me for a loop. We were at her place, and our conversation turned to the history of education reform. That’s one of my favorite topics, so naturally, I started talking about it in depth. Jane listened intently, asking great questions. It felt like she was genuinely interested. But then, something shifted. She leaned forward and whispered that she wanted me to teach her more than just historical facts. She suggested we role-play a student-teacher dynamic while keeping everything consensual and clear from any misunderstanding. I agreed, feeling an odd mixture of arousal and guilt. We made sure to use safe words and maintained consent throughout. I know this sounds strange, but it felt freeing in a way. It was as if being able to explore that dynamic safely allowed us to express aspects of ourselves that we don't get to show at work or even outside our relationship. Afterwards, I’ve been reflecting on whether this is crossing some kind of line and how to maintain boundaries moving forward. I haven’t discussed it with Jane yet out of fear she’ll see me differently if she knew about the doubts running through my mind. Am I being overly cautious? Or am I setting a healthy boundary for our relationship and professional lives?
