A Lie I Told Myself and Others

So, you know how sometimes you tell yourself little lies to feel better about something? Well, that's exactly what happened a few weeks ago. It was right after my breakup with Sarah, not the kind where you break up over some huge fight or anything dramatic like that; just one of those mutual realizations things aren't working anymore and it's best to move on. I told everyone I broke up because I needed to focus on being me, which is true in a way. But there was this little lie mixed in there too, the kind where you sort of convince yourself and others that something happened for the right reasons when maybe deep down, part of it just feels easier this way. Here's the thing: I did feel like being with Sarah sometimes pulled me away from taking care of myself fully as a trans man. She was great about everything, supportive, loving, all those wonderful things people want in relationships, but there were moments where I felt less confident in expressing my identity because I wasn't sure how much to talk about it or if it'd be too much for her. So when we decided to break up, I told everyone it was to focus on myself. And you know what? I genuinely want to do that now more than ever, but there's also this part of me that knows I could've worked through those feelings with Sarah if I really wanted to. It feels a bit like lying to protect myself from the harder conversation we might have needed. But hey, here's the kicker: I don't regret it. Breaking up was probably better for both of us in the long run because now I'm more clear about what I need and want moving forward. And honestly? It felt good telling people I did this brave thing to focus on myself, even if a part of me knows there was more to it than just that. I suppose my confession is more about owning up to those little lies we tell ourselves and others in the name of self-care or growth, they're not always bad intentions, but it's important to acknowledge them too.
